The Blogging Elves Didn’t Visit!
Sunday, August 6th, 2006When I returned to my blog after being sick for a while, I was amusingly disappointed to find that nothing had changed since I left. Indeed, my blog looked shamefully stale.
I don’t know what I was hoping for exactly. I suppose I had envisioned a real-life, 21st Century, Brothers Grimm fairy tale — “The Elves and The Blogger.” Yes, that’s it — I had wished that some posts would’ve magically appeared in my absence.
I wasn’t expecting the level of elf-effort that would go into cobbling shoes, like I remembered from The Elves and The Shoemaker tale, but seeing a few simple words on the screen would’ve been nice.
On second thought, my blog is a place for me to share ideas and to connect with other people. Maybe it wouldn’t be wise to turn it over to some mysterious, mystical, and perhaps mischievous, little beings.
I suppose I’m glad to find my blog starving for posts after all.

Hi Cuileann! I’m glad you’re feeling better and ready to get back into things again. You’re probably just as well off without the brownies or elves. The elves could take you into a mountain for a hundred years and the brownies are just a s likely to be ‘playful’ as helpful.

Hi Rick!
Thanks for saying hi and for your well wishes!
I appreciate your guidance, too, about not accepting help from either elves or brownies. The brownies hadn’t crossed my mind before, but now I know to keep my guard up!
I guess all of our blogging work and glory will remain our own (no magical shortcuts)!
Blog on!

You see. It works out. Bloglines has been giving me fits for the past couple days and this post just showed up as new this morning. I didn’t even notice any “staleness” around here because all my feeds were out of whack!

Hi Chris!
I hope Bloglines starts to give you less grief!
Thanks for saying hi and for your reassuring words about my blog not seeming too stale after all!
Cheers!

I’m trying out something I learned from my pro blog; scheduling posts. I sometimes have so much to write, that I’ve had days when as many as five posts appeared. Other times, my mind’s a complete blank. But since blogs now allow you to set a release date for posts, you can sometimes just sit back and relax, without any worries of staleness.

Hi Rico!
Thanks so much for your suggestion about scheduling posts! I will definitely explore that. Having a couple of them done ahead would’ve lessened my anxiety about needing some time off. Now I’ll just have to find the self-discipline to write more than what I would post immediately.
Thanks for the great tip!
