Starting A New Round of Revisions
Monday, August 14th, 2006I recently received some very valuable feedback from a well-respected agent. She had requested and reviewed the first forty pages of my novel, Consumption, and sent me an email in response with encouragement and specific suggestions.
In addition to offering guidance, she has agreed to see my writing again after my next round of revisions. Given the heavy workload of agents, I appreciate receiving such targeted feedback!
I’ve carefully considered the agent’s suggestions and can see how a few changes will make a wonderful difference. I’m excited to be launching into this new round of revisions. Perhaps it sounds weird that I’m enthused about starting more work, but I do love the process (which is a good thing when the odds of getting a novel picked up by an agent or publisher sometimes seem daunting)!
Whether or not this agent and I are paired in the future, I’m grateful for feedback that will clearly improve my story. And isn’t that what matters most?

Congratulations, Cuileann!
Is this kind of like getting a callback after an audition?

Thanks, Rick!
Great analogy — I think it\’s much like a callback after an audition! You summed it up so succinctly!
It was an encouraging response from the agent, but now it\’s time to get back to work. I also need to keep things in perspective — the line you have at the top of your blog helps people do that: \”When we were born, we brought only who we were. When we die, we will take only who we are.\”
Speaking of your blog, you\’ve got a great writing style and offer wonderful insights! Have you ever thought of writing a book? Just a thought.
Thanks for offering that \”callback\” phrasing!

Perspective is the whole object of the quote, for me as much, if not more than, the people who come to the blog.
I’m glad the analogy is apt. That makes it even better news! As far as my writing a book, maybe someday. I’m still working on finding a consistent style, my voice if you would, and how to plan something that large.
That’s something I admire about you. Planning and carrying out a book takes focus, skill, and dedication.

Thanks for the kind words, Rick!
I admire the same traits in you — your excellent blog shows a lot of focus, skill, and dedication!
As far as writing a book, I think sometimes when people hold off on starting until the conditions appear just right, the whole idea of writing a “book” can seem more and more intimidating.
Here’s a thought. For now, it might be fun to keep a writing file with no pressure or firm planning. Just have a place to brainstorm and maybe write an occasional paragraph when inspiration strikes. Who knows? Maybe something book-like will be born from it, and if not, at least you’ll have found another way to play with words and express yourself.
Let’s all keep our creative channels open!
