5 Clues that Your Home Office Has Too Much Clutter

Wednesday, August 16th, 2006

#5 — You’ve started appreciating the “aesthetic value” of colorful junk mail in your paper piles.
#4 — Your heating and cooling bills are lower because your paper insulates the house.
#3 — Your spouse has posted a picture of your “archives” on his blog and is looking to technology for help .
#2 — Finding the phone bill has been your full-time job for a week (and you’re still searching…)

And the #1 clue that your office has too much clutter… (drumroll)
National Geographic has come to photograph your Leaning Tower of Paper.

p.s. Kudos to the Lists - Group Writing Project at ProBlogger.net for inspiring this fun post. It’s a great project to get your creativity going! Have you got a list to share, too?

Now this is a great list. Unfortunately #5 shows the problem with keeping vast amounts of unfiled archives, time lost while you could be doing better thing, but the insulation valuation does have something going for it.

Great picture your husband has. Have you considered one of those rented self-storage units for things you absolutely have to have on paper. I know writers can end up with a lot.

I want to see the “National Geographic” pictures when they’re done!

The first sign I need to clean my desk is when the ants show up looking for handouts.

    Hi Rick!

Happy you liked the list! As far as a renting a storage unit, I don’t think we need to go that far yet ;-)

Actually, I’m starting to agree with John that ALMOST everything can be scanned. When I’ve had to find materials he’s already put on the computer, it’s so much easier than going through paper!

As far as writers needing paper, I’ve found that I do have to do my final revisions like that. That’s seems to help me keep things straight. I guess I’m pretty old-school in that way!

    Cheers!

Nice to meet you, Mama Duck!

Glad you found the list funny! Thanks for the heads-up about your list, too! We’ve got a baby nephew and can definitely relate to your thoughts about Lil Duck! Actually, I’ll send my sister (the mom) over to your blog too — I know she’ll get a kick out of it!

    Thanks for saying hi!

    Hi Anton!

Ah, yes, ants. Once in a while, a scout from somewhere will show up on my hubby’s desk. John likes to snack while he’s working or playing on the computer, so I guess they’re questing for crumbs.

May we all never be invaded by a troop!

    Hi Jersey Girl!
So you’ve got stacks, too! If we were to stack all of our stacks together, I wonder how far it would reach into space?

Good luck with all the paper!
